ABOUT US

Initiating a Cashless Society in Malaysia

The Cashless Society Initiative aims to stimulate the culture of a “Digital First Society” and increase public awareness that the adoption of digital payments is convenient, secure, fast, and easy. The initiative also aims to enable hybrid sales for small traders/retailers to expand their market through digital channels, increase income opportunities, and ensure business continuity during unexpected calamities like floods, COVID-19, etc.

The Cashless Society Initiative has introduced the Cashless Society Framework, which is guided by four key pillars: Digital & Financial Literacy, Security & Safety, Income Opportunity, and Capacity Building. The success of this framework is assessed by the number of community touchpoints that are digital-ready through the implementation of the aforementioned pillars, the number of cashless payments transacted, and the number of traders onboarded on digital platforms.

The first phase was launched in Melaka and at 28 NADI centers nationwide in late 2022. Through the Cashless Melaka and promotional and awareness campaign, a total of 13,000 cashless transaction users were reached, and over 2,300 merchants were successfully registered on digital platforms. Based on the positive outcomes of this programme, MCMC has further continued the Cashless Society Scaling Up Initiative Phase 2 2024 in three states: Johor, Negeri Sembilan, and Pahang together with its strategic partners. Moving forward, Phase 3 is scheduled to be rolled out in Perak, Sabah, and Sarawak in 2025, continuing the initiative’s strategic expansion across the nation.
